Organic annatto seeds are small, red, pyramid-shaped seeds from the "lipstick tree" used as a natural, earthy, and mildly peppery-nutmeg spice and vibrant orange-red colorant. Native to tropical America, they are staples in Latin/Caribbean cuisine for flavoring oil, stews, rice, and creating achiote paste. Pictured is whole product THIS IS GROUND.
What makes it special...
This plant is commonly called the lipstick plant due to it’s bright red seeds. In fact it is most commonly used as a natural dye because it is so bright!
So why is it red? It is high in bixin and norbixin, the natural carotenoid pigments.
Found in Peru, in the past indigenous peoples of the Amazon used annatto seeds as body paint, ceremonial dye, and traditional medicine.
